Archive for January, 2010

I recently had a converstation with another photographer as to which she posted what we talked about on her blog.

she couldn’t have said things BETTER!

so I got her premission to copy and paste her excact words.  :)

For all those PHOTOGRAPHERS just starting up, or those who are thinking of going into this industry….please read!

I truly feel so sad for all of the people who lost their jobs with kiddie kandids, and for a business that was in business for years.  My dad was one of the first to call and tell me the good news (you see as a photographer, he thought for sure it was good news for me as clients would be beating down my door to schedule appointments.) “Dad” I  said, you dont understand, custom photography is different than what kiddie kandids produced.  He said hmm how? I proceeded to tell him that I edit clients images, include up to 40 proofs for them to view, spend an an hour to an hour and a half with them on sessions and im out to capture more than just a glimpse in time.  Im here to produce art! Images that we can cherish forever, moments that can be felt through the images we hold as heirlooms.  Im not writing this to start a great debate, not at all, but im writing this to say…….Im really concerned about our industry here in Utah.  Things are very saturated here.  Now thats not a problem as much as it is photographers armed with cameras that they dont know how to use, pricing they dont know where to start with, and products that are being sold to consumers that are sub par to the industry.  Now when I say subpar, Im meaning lacking the knowledge, not the ability.  When I first started photography I had NO mentors, no one to tell me I was crazy for charging $50 for a cd and session and no one that I could ask questions too.  I think this is a perfect time for us as photographers, to help one another and rebuild the industry here in Utah! Im tired of selling portraits, I want to sell heirlooms and priceless art pieces! Now dont let anyone make you feel inferior or sub par if you are just starting out in photography, or for that matter, if you are wanting to start out in photography.  We have all been there! We all have to go through and learn to shoot in manual, learn photoshop, learn lighting and other aspects but we all have some sort of different creativity and ability!  If you are thinking about doing photography, or are doing photography, just take a step back and look at a few things, why you are doing it, and is what your asking worth your time? I definitely believe in different price levels, we are all at different levels, but lets put name brand back on custom photography! Offer products that are different, quality that is superior and will hold up as heirloom pieces.   Now why did I write this you ask?????? I want to help! Yes of course, ive always loved helping!!!! So if you are a photographer, or a client or just a blog hopper and are yearning to know something please stop by ask some questions and Im going to start a Q&A area on my blog that will be up for photographers to view all the time. so please email me at marissavargasonphotography@gmail.com.  Now go ahead ask anything! you know what they say, the only dumb question is the one not asked. I really want to see our memories valued as art again, because lets face it, we know these moments in life are PRICELESS!!!!!

To all my valued clients…….I strive only to produce and deliver quality heirloom products that will last for years to come for you and your family to cherish forever.  Thats what I expect, so that is what I will deliver.

Peace, Love, and happy rebuilding!

I was SO HAPPY she posted this, as I feel the SAME WAY!

I had NO one to help me….

I would stay up late at night till 1:00 in the morning for many nights  just figureing out how to properly size and sharpen my pictures.

Please feel free to contact either marissa or I with any questions….

I don’t claim to no it all!   And I still have mountains to climb to be where I want to be.  But i want to help those who feel that have no where else to go, or ask!
